The Hyundai Construction Racing Falcon’s start to the first round of the Holden Performance Drive Centre V8 Supercar Series didn’t start well – less than half way through the first practice session it hit a stalled car amidships in Adelaide’s blind chicane.
7/4/2005 18:47 (Press Release) -
Gary MacDonald, driving the Kanga Loaders Racing AU Falcon, brought home a 5th place in the first Holden Performance Driving Centre V8 Supercar Series race of the 2005 season.
MacDonald, driving the AU Falcon that he first campaigned in the 2004 Bathurst Konica-Minolta race, started 6th on the grid. He was jumped at the start by Jose Fernandez – with whom at Bathurst he was involved in a ‘racing incident’ two corners from home. It wasn’t long before he claimed what he believed to be rightfully his, passing Fernandez under brakes at the end of the main straight, the race then being led by Canto, Luff, D’Alberto, Macrow and Scifleet.
MacDonald turned in the Kanga Falcon’s fastest lap of the race – and the sixth fastest time of all competitors – on lap 7.
The Kanga Loaders Racing Falcon stayed in touch with Scifleet through to lap 8. Clipping some tyres threw out the wheel alignment and MacDonald slowly drifted back into the clutches of Elliott, who passed Gary on lap 13. MacDonald kept Elliott’s rear bumper in sight for four laps and pounced to regain his 6th place when Elliott overbraked at the end of the straight and brushed the tyre wall.
Urged on by his head mechanic from Steve Ellery Racing, Derek Todd, Gary kept his head down in search of more championship points. In this game points are very hard fought for, and sometimes they come at the expense of fellow competitors. On lap 18 Warren Luff, driving the ex Russell Ingall Stone Brothers BA, had a tyre deflate – robbing him of his second position. As in life, one man’s loss is often another’s gain, and the Kanga Loaders Racing Falcon inherited fifth position, where it stayed for the remaining six laps.
Pleased with his efforts, MacDonald said, “The car is in one piece and straight. We have gained a position, which is a bonus, and got a good swag of points. We also have a good grid position for tomorrow’s final race.”
The Kanga Loaders Racing Falcon will start in grid position 5 for Race Two on Saturday, 19 March.
