Super Tourer Robson to drive the "Imrie"

4/9/2000 17:23 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Super Touring racer Anthony Robson will pilot the infamous Mike Imrie Commodore in this week’s Queensland 500, in a new deal announced today.

Robson tested Imrie’s IMS VS Commodore at Calder last week – his first time behind the wheel of a V8 – and impressed Imrie and team enough to be given the drive.

V8 Lites racer Daniel Miller will partner Robson in the Imrie Commodore entry.

Robson adapted well to the new driving environment at the Calder test, and is looking forward to the 500km challenge.

"The biggest thing to get used to was just how deep you could go under brakes in the V8, despite its size and weight," 30-year-old Robson said. "Other than that I was soon into the swing of things."

Robson most recently campaigned a BMW in this year’s Super Touring Championship, after running a Honda Accord in 1999. He has raced the two litre machines for the past three years.

He also has endurance racing experience under his belt, including contesting the Bathurst Super Touring race over the past three years. He won his class in the Bathurst three-hour GTP race driving a Toyota in 1997.

“Whatever happens in the 500, it will at least be less controversial than when Mike’s car last raced at Queensland Raceway,” Robson joked, referring to the Imrie/Russell Ingall incident in July.

"We'll see how the Queensland 500 goes and look at putting together a budget to drive Mike's car at Bathurst,” he said.
