Porter: Wrong place at the wrong time
7/4/2005 18:25 (Press Release) -
Things went horribly wrong for Mark Porter and his brand-new Hyundai Construction Racing BA Falcon in the first practice session for the Holden Performance Driving Centre V8 Supercar series at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 today.
After only nine laps on a track yet to get some grip, Mark had settled in to the brand-new Steve Ellery Racing prepared BA, which is also supported by long-time Mark Porter supporter Hydraulink Fluid Connectors and CarPoint.
Mark was preparing to make an assault on the track and entered the chicane at the end of pit straight only to find Tony Evangelou stalled side-on across the track. It was a case of Porter being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the brand-new Hyundai Construction Equipment Racing Falcon BA T-boned Evangelou, severely damaging its front end.
The Steve Ellery Racing crew, who have put in long hours to build the brand-new BA since mid-January, examined the crashed car on its return to pits. Apart from the obvious external damage plus broken radiator and steering rack, the SER crew found the front right chassis rail bent outwards and a few centimetres shorter than it had been.
The car was stripped of the broken bits and wheeled up to the young TAFE crew at the circuit. In a few hours they straightened the car, enabling the SER crew to go to work rebuilding it.
Although not able to participate in the second practice session or qualifying, Porter is confident that the hard-working SER crew will have his Hyundai Construction Racing Falcon ready to start from the rear of the grid in Race One at 6.45 pm local time on Friday, 18 March.
