WPS RACING EASES INTO NEW SEASON
17/3/2005 18:28 (Press Release) -
WPS Racing today kept its focus on the season-opening Clipsal 500 in Adelaide in two weeks by testing various car set ups on the opening day of the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
The team came out of the blocks firing, with foundation driver David Besnard sitting inside the top 10 for most of the morning practice session.
He ultimately had the 10th fastest time of the morning, while new recruit Craig Baird was 15th in his first competitive hitout with WPS.
The team then chose not to use its tyre bank during the afternoon qualifying session and it saw Besnard slide to 22nd and Baird to 25th.
Both drivers remained satisfied with their day, which was used primarily to test the cars ahead of the first race in the 2005 V8 Supercar Championship Series in Adelaide.
“I’m pleased we have had some time on the track ahead of Adelaide,” said Baird.
“We came here with our focus set firmly on Adelaide but it still would have been nice to qualify a little higher.
“Anyway, we have to focus on the main goal and that is the first round of the series.”
Besnard was similarly pleased with the day’s racing, considering the limited use of new rubber.
“It was all pretty good today and we are on track for the season opener,” he said.
WPS Racing, which entered the championship last year, is sponsored by Wright Patton Shakespeare Financial Group, a company associated with businessman Craig Gore.
Wright Patton Shakespeare is also the official financial services provider to the V8 Supercar Championship Series and the sponsor of the series’ Safety Car program.
