Top 10 for Tander on debut with new team
17/3/2005 17:53 (Press Release) -
Holden Special Vehicles Dealer Team recruit Garth Tander was quick out of the blocks with his new team today, setting the seventh fastest time in qualifying at the Albert Park Grand Prix circuit.
The 2000 Bathurst winner laid down his best time with his second last lap of the session, stopping the clocks at 1 min. 58.38 seconds, ensuring a top 10 grid place for tomorrow’s opening race – the first of three over the grand prix weekend.
Teammate Rick Kelly struggled with car set up on the first day, recording the 13th quickest time – 1 min. 58.9 sec. However, he was confident that tweaks overnight would wring more speed out of the #15 Commodore.
Both cars had their baptism of fire with the new-look HSV Dealer Team today, coming through the first shakedown in race conditions without trouble.
#15 Rick Kelly – qualified 13th – 1:58.9.
“Heading into the grand prix, we knew we had to get the hang of these new cars, and that would take a bit. But being 13th is a bit disappointing – hard to get our head around. However, it shouldn’t be too bad – fortunately we know of a few things to fix.”
#16 Garth Tander – qualified 7th – 1:58.9.
“We were happy with that. My personal goal was to qualify in the top 10 in my first run with new team, and we have achieved that. The car responded well to all the changes we made, so everything we have done has been positive. So we will just keep chipping away over the course of the weekend, just keeping moving forward and aim for a podium.”
