MARCOS AMBROSE LATEST EELS FAN

17/3/2005 16:05 (Press Release) - Back-to-back V8 Supercar champion Marcos Ambrose has been presented with one of the first new-look Parramatta Eels rugby league jerseys for 2005.

Ambrose has not been signed by one of the National Rugby League competition’s most popular clubs, but now has a strong affiliation with the Eels after his V8 Supercar team’s sponsor, Pirtek, recently became one of the club’s new major corporate partners.

Ambrose dropped into the Parramatta Leagues Club this week and was presented with his jumper by the Club’s Corporate Sales and Marketing Manager and 1981 first grade premiership captain Steve Edge.

“The Parramatta Eels are obviously one of the country’s most famous football clubs and it’s fantastic that Pirtek has become the club’s major sponsor,” said Ambrose, who will be chasing a hat-trick of championships in his Pirtek Ford this year.

“They tell me that plenty of the Eels are V8 Supercar fans, especially Nathan Hindmarsh who is also a Ford man.

“I am originally from Tasmania and know more about AFL than league, but I have a great respect for these guys.

“I will probably have the chance to take a couple of the guys for a run in my Pirtek Falcon during the year, but I think I will pass-up any chance to join them for tackling practice.

“I see the Pirtek Eels had a good win at the weekend and it would be great if that form could continue through the season and we could celebrate a V8 Supercar Championship and an NRL title in 2005.”

Edge welcomed Ambrose into the club with open arms.

“We are thrilled to have Pirtek on board as a major corporate partner,” said Edge.

“We are also delighted Marcos could drop into the Leagues Club, say hello and be presented with his 2005 jumper.

“Marcos is obviously a champion in his chosen sport and we look forward to him being around the place a bit this year as the Eels chase their own title.”

Pirtek built its business in Western Sydney and will be celebrating its 25th year in business in 2005. Pirtek’s Managing Director Glenn Duncan saw the opportunity to become involved with the Parramatta Eels too good to pass up.

“We see supporting the Parramatta Eels as an extension of our own core business philosophies,” said Duncan.

“The Parramatta Club has a great reputation in its ongoing support for charities like Ronald McDonald House, the Northcott Society and the Salvation Army, as well as its encouragement in regards to the Junior League and Schools programmes.

“Just as the Parramatta Club has developed many locals into Rugby League greats, Pirtek has built its franchised business with many young Pirtek employees from the local district going on to own and run Pirtek franchises across the country.

“We have a saying at Pirtek, that I believe is also relevant to the Parramatta Eels – a willing and winning attitude is our way of life.

“We have experienced some tremendous success with our V8 Supercar program in recent years and hopefully some of that can rub off on the Eels as they chase the NRL title this year.”

The Eels make their 2005 NRL debut against West Tigers at Sydney’s Telstra Stadium on Sunday March 13, while Pirtek Racing gets its season underway at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide one week later.
