Perth Supercar street race still on Agenda

12/8/2000 22:32 (Shane Rogers) - The immediate fate of V8Supercar racing in Western Australia appears in the hands of the state government according to sources close to the new Perth street event.

The organisers of the event are currently waiting for an answer from the Western Australian government, who are considering whether to stage an event in the streets of the state’s capital.

It is believed that pending approval from the government, an agreement has already been made to allow V8Supercars to race in the streets of Perth in 2001. If approval is not forthcoming then the organisers are still hopeful that AVESCO will still make the commitment required to run a Shell Series round at Barbagallo raceway.

With the new races in New Zealand and possibly in Brunei in 2001, AVESCO are not keen to add additional events to avoid increasing costs in running V8Supercars. Another cost containment problem for organisers is caused by longer races, of which more are expected to be in next year’s schedule.

AVESCO are expected to announce the 2001 Shell Series calendar in the first week of October.
