V8 Supercar Championship leader Marcos Ambrose has been voted the top driver in V8 Supercars by a panel assembled for the inaugural V8 Supercar Yearbook Top 10 Drivers Award.
A panel of 10 from various parts of the motorsport industry voted Ambrose a run away winner of the award from Craig Lowndes and Greg Murphy.
“We weren’t that surprised with Ambrose’s win because he has had such a good year, but Lowndes was a complete shock to all of us,” Yearbook editor Andrew Clarke said. “It has been a tough year for him, but when the car has been good his talent has really stood up.
“When the idea of this story was pitched to us, we thought there might be some interesting results, and it has certainly proven the case. We wanted to be able to take a look at the drivers and try to discount the quality of the equipment they have to race with, and it seems all of our voting panel were able to do that.”
Ambrose and Lowndes scored votes from all 10 panelists, as did Rick Kelly who finished 8th overall. Lowndes sits 19th in the Championship going into the final round of the Series.
The voting panel for the Yearbook’s Top 10 Drivers was: Larry Perkins, Kim Jones, Marcos Ambrose, Mark Skaife, Tim Schenken, Wayne Cattach, Barry Oliver, Neil Crompton, Paul Gover and Andrew Clarke.
The full story and details of the voting is available in the V8 Supercar Yearbook The 2004 V8 Supercars Yearbook 2004 is a 208 page chronicle of the 2004 season, and will provide a life-long record of the events and drama that made the season what it was.
Sales through newsagents around Australia are scheduled to commence on December 22, but with high demand expected the safest way to get a copy of the Yearbook is through the V8 Supercar Yearbook website - v8yearbook.com.
