Tasman Motorsport urges Sydney fans to come and say goodbye

29/11/2004 19:29 (Press Release) - The imminent departure of Sydney’s only V8 Supercar operation, Tasman Inner Circle Rum Motorsport, to its new Melbourne home, makes this weekend’s final round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Eastern Creek the last chance for Sydney fans to come and cheer for their “home” team.

Tasman Motorsport driver Jason Richards, who joined the team at the beginning of 2004, said he had been pleased to find a passionate core of Sydney-based supporters who had followed the team this year to rounds at Eastern Creek, Oran Park and Bathurst.

“In some ways it’s a shame to have to leave Sydney, because we’ve got some great fans about the place,” he said. “A lot of people barrack for Tasman as the underdog, and they take a lot of pleasure out of our successes. We hope they will stay with us.

“It would be great to see a real show of support at “the Creek” – it means a lot to us to be saying goodbye to the state this team has called home for many years.”

Richards said the team wanted to complete its last race as a Sydney team in style.

“Although this is our first trip to Eastern Creek with the new car we debuted in Round 5, this team conducted all of its testing here last year and we think we’ve got a better idea than most of how to respond to the very changeable conditions this track is famous for,” he said.

“We’re aiming to finish 2004 in the way we want to start 2005 – with a solid performance we can all be proud of. A top 10 finish would be an outstanding result given the learning curve we’ve been on this year, although with the number of Top 10s we’ve made this year that should be our minimum expectation.”

A good performance would also boost Richards’ stocks in championship standings – he sits a disappointing 18th, but with 12th-placed Mark Winterbottom just 49 points ahead can pick up a handful of places for a respectable finish to the season.

“There’s six guys there we can still challenge,” Richards said. “There are some big scalps in that group and more than a few we’d like to have behind us for a bit of a moral victory.

“There’s also a twilight race on the Saturday evening, which is something we haven’t seen in this series for many years. So hopefully we’ll get good weather and a big crowd will turn out this weekend for the season finale. I hope most of them will be yelling for the home-town team to have a good one!”
