Winterbottom's 'Steel stockists tour' in North Queensland

29/11/2004 19:02 (Press Release) - Orrcon Racing V8 Supercar driver Mark Winterbottom will be taking in the sights of North Queensland this week as he conducts a whirlwind trip around North Queensland.

Winterbottom, the stand out Rookie in this year's Championship, will travel 4000 kilometres in four days during a “steel stockists tour” for Orrcon, the steel tube manufacturer and distributor. The tour will take him from his native Gold Coast to Cairns on Tuesday night followed by a visit to Tully, Ingham, Townsville and Mackay over the following days before heading home on Friday evening.

With one round remaining in the 2004 Championship, Winterbottom is 12th in the points standings and has consistently been inside the top half of the highly competitive 32-car field throughout the year.

Winterbottom's consistency has the 23-year-old placed ahead of many of the more experienced drivers in the Championship including Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes and Glenn Seton.

”After winning the Konica V8 Championship last year it has been a big leap to the top level of motorsport in the country, but it is a case of finishing races and getting the experience. Overall it has been a very rewarding year,” said Winterbottom

”When I look back at the year it has really been a good one, both for me and the team with Bargs (Orrcon Racing team mate Jason Bargwanna) sitting eighth in the Championship. It is the best position the team has been in the Championship for many years.

”It was a tough round in Tasmania earlier this month after starting from pit lane due to an incident before the first race then clawing my way back to eighth in the third and final 42 lap journey. My focus now turns to achieving a good result at the final round at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Raceway.”

Winterbottom's “steel stockists tour” throughout North Queensland will be his first visit to the region and the 23 year-old is using the opportunity to spend a few days in Cairns before his tour commences.

”It’s not often I get a chance during the Championship to take a holiday as we spend a lot of our spare time training or fulfilling sponsor commitments, so I take every opportunity when I can to relax,” said Winterbottom.

”Everyone has told me how great North Queensland is and I’m looking forward to sampling the beaches and other tourist hot spots."

Winterbottom's first appearance in his “steel stockists tour” will be at Steelbarn, 75 Aumuller Street, Portsmith from 8:30 until 10:30 followed by a visit to Tonkin Steel until midday.

After stopping in at Ingham Agencies at both Tully and Ingham during the afternoon Winterbottom will head to Townsville for three "pit stops" during the Thursday at Sims Steel, SV Steel and Steelbarn. He will then head to Charters Waters to appear at North Queensland Steel Stocks and stay for the evening in Charters Waters before returning to appear at Tonkin Steel in Townsville on Friday morning.

Winterbottom's final “pit stops” of his “steel stockists tour” will be in Mackay at the Independent Steel Warehouse and Steel Central.
