R9 PENALTIES - He'd do it again? Not according to CAMS

1/8/2000 21:24 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - The “misquote defence” has been used to great effect by Russell Ingall over the weekend, after “the Enforcer” cleared his name of wrongdoing at a CAMS hearing at Oran Park on Friday.

Ingall was charged for “bringing the sport into disrepute” after he was quoted as saying “I should have unloaded him the corner before” and “I’d do it again if necessary” in relation to the now infamous Ingall V’s Mike Imrie encounter from Queensland Raceway last month.

The always outspoken Ingall let fly with his thoughts on the incident to the media following the event, resulting in the delayed hearing at Oran Park Raceway on Friday.

However, Ingall claimed that the “sensational nature of some tabloid Journalism” had painted him in the wrong light. Stewards found in favour of Ingall, dropping all charges.

Plenty more drivers were paraded before CAMS officials at Oran Park throughout the weekend. The following conclusions were reached:

FRIDAY JULY 28
**A hearing was held over from Round 7 of the Championship regarding the publication of alleged remarks by Russell Ingall regarding the incident he had with Mike Imrie at Queensland Raceway. Evidence came in the form of newspaper and motor magazine articles, as well as e-mails. Mr Ingall stated that he had not made the comments, which had been published, and included statements such as, "I should have unloaded him the corner before," and "I'd do it again if necessary.” He did, however make a number of observations in the hearing regarding the sensational nature of some tabloid journalism. It was then found that it could not fairly be taken as conclusive that Russell Ingall's comments had brought the sport into disrepute.

**An inquiry was held into an incident from Round 8 of the championship at Winton Raceway, where the Holden Racing Team had worked on Mark Skaife's car immediately prior to Race 2 and therefore breached the regulations regarding work being undertaken on a vehicle outside its pit area. The findings showed, however, that the car was only briefly checked under the bonnet for safety reasons when a loud noise came from the car while Skaife was turning out of his pits. There was, therefore, no intention to work on the car, rather to simply check the noise, resulting in no penalty being warranted.

**Another inquiry from Winton was held into Mark Skaife's incident with Steve Reed during Race 2, where the two made contact resulting in Reed spinning. After investigating the video evidence, the stewards determined that no further action was needed.

**A third hearing was held from the previous round, this time between Paul Weel and Brad Jones from Race 2 at Winton. The two drivers made contact after Jones tried a passing manoeuvre on the inside of turn 13, resulting in Weel spinning the car. It was found, however, that it was a racing incident and no further action was required.

SATURDAY JULY 29
**The stewards of the meeting received a request to enable Cameron McLean to participate in Race 1, after he had failed to qualify within the 110 % rule of qualifying. Due to the exceptional circumstances it was decided that he be allowed to race, albeit from the rear of the field in Race 1.

SUNDAY JULY 30
**Rodney Forbes did not attend Saturday's Driver's Briefing and was fined $500.

**An incident between Jason Bargwanna and Todd Kelly in race 1 at turn 3 resulted in a hearing being held after contact was made between both drivers. The findings showed that Kelly had breached the careless driving rule and was therefore placed at the rear of the grid for Race 2.

**An inquiry was held into a three way incident between Paul Radisich, Mark Skaife and Steven Richards in race 2. It was found that coming into turn 3 Paul Radisich made contact with the back of Mark Skaife, who then pushed Steven Richards resulting in him spinning. Radisich claimed he was under the impression that Skaife was on the brakes earlier than usual. However, Radisich was found to be guilty of careless driving and was therefore demoted to the rear of the grid for Race 3.

**Another incident during Race 2 involving Dougal McDougall and John Bowe was heard. The findings showed that McDougall had made contact with Bowe causing him to spin. He was found to have breached the careless driving rules and was placed at the rear of the grid for Race 3.
