John Youl bestowed highest Motorsport honour for Tasmania Triple Challenge

26/11/2004 22:02 (Press Release) - The founder of Symmons Plains Raceway, John Youl has been bestowed the honour of Grand Marshal for the inaugural Tasmanian Triple Challenge at Symmons Plains Raceway November 12 -14 it was announced today.

Youl, a Tasmanian motor racing legend will assume the role of Grand Marshal for the event and will take part in the driver’s parade as well as officiate the start procedures for both races on Sunday.

The Youl family owns the Symmons Plains property, situated on the Midland Hwy south of Launceston and have been instrumental in the growth of motorsport in Tasmania.

John Youl will be recognised this weekend for his driving achievements and as the force behind the development of Symmons Plains Raceway.

The recently completed function centre located above the brand new pit complex will be also named in honour of John Youl.

Youl said he felt very privileged at being invited to be part of the official proceeding for the inaugural Tasmanian Triple Challenge event.

“This is such a great honour, Youl said. “I am really looking forward to participating in the driver’s parade and starting of Sunday’s races.

“The changes that have been made to Symmons Plains are remarkable and it is fantastic to see the V8 Supercars return to Tasmania.

“I urge all Tasmanian’s to come and support this fantastic event the traffic management plans that have been put in place will ensure easy access for the large crowds expected to attend,” Youl said.

At the peak of his twelve year career Youl competed against international drivers such as Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren.

Youl was the runner up in the 1962 and 1963 Gold Star Series and was the top placed Australian in the 1963 and 1964 Tasman Cup Series, won by Bruce McLaren.
