Orrcon Racing piping the way in Tasm
26/11/2004 21:59 (Press Release) -
Orrcon Racing V8 Supercar drivers Jason Bargwanna and Mark Winterbottom will check out power of a different kind in the lead up to this weekend’s Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania.
Tomorrow the pair will visit the Powerco plant, outside of Launceston, to see first hand the progress of the Powerco’s latest project with the Tasmanian government to construct a backbone gas distribution network in the state.
The project provides Powerco with the approval to distribute natural gas to Tasmania's major industrial and commercial customers.
Powerco began work on the project in May 2003 with the commencement of the design process. The first stage of the project is due for completion later this year.
The first stage of the project incorporates Powerco laying approx 60 km of Orrcon API gas pipe in the urban areas of Hobart, Launceston, Devonport, Burnie and Bell Bay.
The second phase of the natural gas network, planned to begin rolling out early in 2005, will make gas available to approximately 38,500 of the state's smaller commercial and residential customers.
“It has been a pleasure to work with a great company like Powerco on the development of this infrastructure project, for the benefit of Tasmanian industry and the local gas consumers” said Orrcon Oil and Gas project Manager Ben Glasson.
“We look forward to supporting Powerco where we can in the upcoming stages of the project.”
Bargwanna says he is looking forward to the visit to Powerco “I was at the Australian Pipeline Industry Conference a couple of weeks ago and everyone was talking about Powerco’s new project. After seeing the project from the nerve centre tomorrow I will have a good understanding of how big it really is.”
Following their visit to Powerco’s Launceston plant the Orrcon Racing pair will travel south to be a part of the summer catalogue sale at the Nubco store in Hobart.
Nubco, a family owned company, has five stores throughout Tasmania stocking everything from Orrcon steel and tube through to power tools and nuts and bolts.
In conjunction with the catalogue promotion Bargwanna and Winterbottom will be on hand at Nubco’s customer BBQ at 13a Lampton Avenue, Derwent Park on Thursday from 1:30pm until 3:30pm. By visiting Nubco’s Hobart stores at this time customers and fans will have the opportunity to have a chat to the drivers and obtain autographs prior to the V8 Supercars firing up at the Symmons Plains Raceway in Launceston on Friday for opening practice.
This weekend’s event will be the first time the V8 Supercars have returned to Tasmania since 1999 and a healthy crowd is expected to witness the three 42-lap races.
For those unable to make the trip to see the action live, Network Ten will telecast Race One from 3:30pm on Saturday. The coverage for the remaining two races continues on Sunday from 2:30pm – 5:00pm.
