WPS Racing 19th at Surfers Paradise

9/11/2004 19:24 (Press Release) - A borrowed drive in David Besnard’s V8 Supercar ended in a top 20 finish for WPS Racing’s John McIntyre in the second of the two-race Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge on the streets of Surfers Paradise in Queensland on Sunday.

McIntyre finished 19th in Besnard’s Car 23 Ford Falcon, while team mate Alex Yoong placed 24th in Car 48.

It was a repeat of the previous day’s first race for McIntyre as he drove with great patience to record consecutive 19th place finishes.

“The whole weekend has been an excellent experience,” said McIntyre.

“We struggled a bit in a few areas but my job was to finish the race and bring the car back to the garage in one piece.

“I managed to achieve that and I ended up with a pair of top 20 finishes in the two races.”

McIntyre, whose previous experience in the category comprises three co-driving roles in endurance events, only earned a place in the car about two weeks ago following his solid performance as Besnard’s co-driver in the Bathurst 1000.

The ride became available after team owner Craig Gore negotiated a one-off Champ car drive for Besnard in a Wright Patton Shakespeare-supported Reynard.

He went on to the track after the conclusion of the V8 race and put in a stirring drive to finish 7th in the Lexmark Indy 300.

Earlier, Alex Yoong, the other WPS Racing entry in the Gillette V8 Supercar Challenge, placed 24th in Sunday’s race after a disappointing first day of racing on Saturday.

Yoong was shunted out of Saturday’s race on the first lap but recovered on Sunday despite experiencing some steering and braking difficulties.

“It was a frustrating weekend and we never really recovered from the incident on Saturday,” he said.

“I felt I drove well and I had consistent lap times so that is one positive.

“But at the start of the race I was getting some under-steering and there appeared to be a braking problem, although the car did improve once the fuel came off.”
