Skaife's 'Golden Child' makes a comeback
8/11/2004 18:56 (Press Release) -
One of Australia’s most successful racecars will make a surprise comeback for the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Surfers Paradise this weekend.
Known at Holden Racing Team as ‘The Golden Child’, the VX/VY Chevrolet-powered hybrid Commodore piloted by Mark Skaife won two Bathurst 1000s, two Clipsal 500s and two V8 Championships during HRT’s stellar seasons of 2001/02.
The car has sat quietly under cover for twelve months in the corner of the workshop since the team’s switch to VYs, before being resurrected last week under a special dispensation being granted by TEGA to race this weekend.
This has come about, as HRT found insufficient time to repair Todd Kelly’s back-up race Commodore – severely damaged at Bathurst when Jason Plato was hit at high speed by fellow U.K. driver John Cleland early in the race.
“Todd is chasing down 6th position in the Championship, so he will switch to my VY Commodore at Surfers and give himself every chance to secure a bag full of points,” Skaife explained. “Although we had our problems at Bathurst there was nothing wrong with the speed of the vehicle.”
“I’m more than happy to pull the car out of retirement in this situation – it will bring back some pleasant memories and should also run competitively.
“This is very much a one-off arrangement as we are in the process of finishing our new VY racecar which should debut in Tasmania next month,” Skaife said.
