Broken steering rack ends Mundy's final race
10/10/2004 22:28 (Press Release) -
A broken steering rack has prematurely ended PCR/Actron Air Racing driver Kevin Mundy’s final Konica Minolta V8 Supercar race at Mount Panorama today. Mundy and team mate Marcus Zukanovic came together on the opening lap of the twenty-five lap race as they entered ‘The Cutting’ and both cars sustained damage.
While Mundy raced on after the incident Zukanovic was forced into the pits to fix his passenger side front door which came loose during the altercation.
Mundy battled on and had climbed his way up to twelfth place before his a broken steering rack forced him to retire on lap twelve.
“It wasn’t the finale I had imagined,” Mundy said. “I was pretty disappointed with what happened and looking at the footage we were both to blame.
“I thought I had a problem with the steering early on as the car was really heavy and I had a lot of trouble going across the top of the mountain.
“The problem got worse as I went on and in the end I had to bring the car in.
Mundy’s team mate Marcus Zukanovic worked his way up from last to twelfth in his first ever race at Mount Panorama.
Team owner Paul Cruickshank said he was disappointed with both of his Konica Minolta charges.
“I am really disappointed in both of them,” Cruickshank said. “Two blue into one cutting does not go.
“It was the first lap of a twenty-five lap race they both should have given each other a bit of room."
