Bathurst 1000: Hour 5

10/10/2004 15:13 (Mark Jones) - Marcos Ambrose is back into the lead at the end of the fifth hour after another safety car restart with John Bowe hunting down Steven Johnson in the Shell Helix Falcon.

Russell Ingall completes an all Ford quadrella while the next car, the first of the Holdens appears to have a stop in hand.

Strategy has fallen into the hands of Garry Rogers Motorsport, with Cameron McConville changing Garth Tander in a stop that suited them, but few other teams as cars attempted to stretch fuel mileage when a safety car period emerged to confront the field.

Paul Radisich caused the safety car, albeit indirectly, after the front right hub failed and the car ground to a halt just past Skyline. Radisich and Wilson had worked the car into the lead of the race just prior to their pitstop and were sitting in fourth place when the car failed.

Nine cars are still on the leadlap at this stage with Tander sitting in fifth position, ahead of Jason Bargwanna, Craig Lowndes and Jason Richards in the Tasman Motorsport Commodore which has lapped consistently well all day along with a great drive from co-driver, Fabian Coulthard.

The race has just gone three-quarter distance, with all cars still having one stop still to make in the run to the flag.
