Bathurst 1000: Hour 2
10/10/2004 12:29 (Mark Jones) -
Glenn Seton leads the race at the two hour mark in the Caterpillar Falcon from defending race champion Rick Kelly in the K-Mart Commodore with Paul Dumbrell in the second of the Castrol Commodores in third position.
Just at the two hour mark Jim Richards clouted the tyre wall on the outside of Griffins Bend after the throttle stuck going up Mountain Straight on lap 48. The team immiediatelypitted and changed drivers, sending Steven Richards outto evaluate the damage.
Also often can happen after a safety car, another incident can quickly follow. It started when Jason Plato in the famous '05' Peter Brock Commodore, whacked the wall at Murrays Corner, almost instantly deflating the front right tyre.
Plato had to limp around the entire length of the circuit, was in the middle of the track coming through the final corner of the Chase when he was struck from behind by an unsighted John Cleland in the seocnd Ozemail Falcon. Cleland rolled onto the roof in a heavy impact, putting both cars into retirement.
The subsequant safety car period saw the end of a front runner as Jason Bright pulled into the pits with a recurrance of the teams brake dramas from early in the season, resulting in a brakeless trip across the sand trap at Skyline.
Mark Skaife added to HRT's woes after breaking an alternator belt, dropping downfield and is now last car circulating.
