The Safety Car has just peeled off the circuit with Craig Lowndes charging past three cars who got briefly tangled in Hell Corner, Paul Morris, Paul Dumbrell & Mark Skaife, allowing Lowndes to get a run climbing up Mountain Striaght.

The safety car was sent out after AU Falcon privateer, Garth Walden crashed in the Esses, coming to rest in the centre of the Dipper, causing some anxoius moment when the seven car battle for fourthposition arrived at the scene.

Steven Richards won the start, but slid across Hell Corner casuing a shoving match with Jason Bright which put Paul Dumbrell briefly into the lead, but Marcos Ambrose led the first lap and built up an eight second lead prior to his first fuel stop.

A slow fuel stop has allowed Steven Richards to pass Ambrose in the safety car queue.

Other incidents in the first hour saw Brad Jones spin at the chase after Steven Richards climbed in the inside. Jones moved across to take the line, Richards rode the ripple strip to try and avoid. Subsequent contact caused Jones to spin. The pair were fighting for third place at the time.
