Travel weary Brabham fastest at Bathurst
8/10/2004 22:27 (Press Release) -
Team Fujitsu's David Brabham brushed aside serious jet lag to post the fastest time in today's Konica V8 Supercar Series first practice session at Bathurst. It took Brabham 38 hours to get to Bathurst from the U.S. where last weekend he competed in the American Grand Am series.
"The travel really took its toll on me yesterday, but I feel better today," David Brabham said.
"Yesterday I wasn't able to walk straight, I was all over the place.
"My trip to Bathurst started in North Carolina and continued through Texas, Los Angeles, Auckland and Sydney.
"I was delayed in both Texas and LA and drove straight from the airport to Bathurst.
"All up from start to finish it took me thirty-eight hours."
Despite his exhaustion, Brabham managed to get more out of the Fujitsu Ford than he first thought.
"I was pleased to get into the thirteens (2m 13s) as quickly as I did," Brabham said.
"I felt reserved in my driving, I was trying to re-learn the car again
so to get a 2.13 was satisfying.
"The times will tumble even further tomorrow but it was a good start."
Brabham is happy to be driving in this weekend's Konica race as well as the main Bathurst 1000.
"I am pleased to be driving the support race," Brabham said.
"Flying in and flying out as I do is not the best way of getting on top of a car.
"The more laps I do the more comfortable I'll be and the more constructive I can be when giving feedback to the team."
Fellow Team Fujitsu driver Jose Fernandez finished the session in ninth place admitting that much more needed to be done before he'd be seriously competitive.
