Bonza Bathurst breakfast all in the name of charity

8/10/2004 22:22 (Press Release) - The sausages were sizzling and the coffee brewing at this morning’s Diabetes Australia-NSW Charity barbecue breakfast, which ensured all track marshals and volunteers were firing on all cylinders during day one of the 42nd Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama.

Inaugural Bathurst 1000 Event winner Bob Jane used the opportunity to chat to the volunteers, reflecting on his own successes at Australia’s most famous of racing circuits.

Jane in particular was happy to lend his support to the cause of the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN’s official charity as they endeavour to raise an estimated $10 000 during the four-day Event.

“For the past 18 months I’ve had to adjust my own eating habits as I was diagnosed with type two diabetes,” said Jane.

“Luckily we were able to pick it up early enough that I only require medication and am not insulin dependent.”

Tasman Motorsport’s Jason Richards, plus Orrcon Racing’s Jason Bargwanna and Mark Winterbottom were happy to help out flipping burgers to ensure many of the 600 volunteer officials were ready for their own tour of duty at the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN.

“The Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 is one of the major focal points of the season and to be able to contribute to such a worthy cause is definitely a great way to start such a special Event,” said 2000 Bathurst winner Bargwanna.

For Richards’ this morning’s breakfast marked an extension of his more recent involvement with Diabetes Australia-NSW, after hosting members of the charity last week at the Tasman Motorsport workshop in Lidcombe.

Richards knows full well the great cause for which monies raised will go to after his mother was diagnosed just two years ago.

The Sydney-based Kiwi, representing one of only two New South Wales-based teams competing at Bathurst, realises there are many greater challenges in life than tackling one of the world’s toughest racing circuits at Mount Panorama.

“Mum’s diagnosis changed her life dramatically,” said Richards. “Because she left it quite a while before getting a test done the illness had set in and it had a greater impact on her.

“Early detection is the key to ensuring the illness is treatable without the use of insulin, and that’s the message Diabetes Australia-New South Wales will be spreading at Bathurst.

“I also have an Uncle who is a long-term sufferer. Because diabetes can be an hereditary condition I had a blood test soon after my mum had been diagnosed.”

IMG Director of Motorsport James O’Brien is pleased to be able to offer the organisation the support of the Bathurst Event and hopes the venture can fulfil their expectations.

“There’s no doubting the enthusiasm of people in attendance at the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 and we certainly encourage patrons to support this worthy cause,” said O’Brien.

“We’re bracing ourselves for yet another major highlight in the 42-year history of the Event during the next four days.

“It’s great to be able to provide our valued fans a viewing extravaganza and in the process be able to contribute further to the wider community through Diabetes Australia-NSW.”

There’ll be no lack of incentive for people to show their support for Diabetes Australia-New South Wales with a massive motorsports memorabilia raffle bound to prick the attention of all racing fans.

One lucky winner will come away from the event boasting a set of four Dunlop SP3000A tyres to be fitted and balanced at any Bob Jane T-Marts store in Australia.

Also up for grabs in the raffle are official signed and framed shirts from Bathurst legend Peter Brock as he shoots for his tenth victory at Mount Panorama plus autographed Dick Johnson Racing merchandise, a Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb pass for two, Caltex fuel vouchers and many more exciting prizes!

Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease and all monies raised over the long weekend will go towards vital diabetes awareness, research, education and advocacy programs.

Raffle tickets will be available at the Diabetes Australia-NSW display stand in Harris Park during the Event.

Grandstand tickets for this year’s Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 can still be purchased through Ticketmaster7.com or by calling 1300 136 122.
