V8 Supercar ace Garth Tander going for Gold...and Green at Bathurst
8/10/2004 22:20 (Press Release) -
Leading Australian motorsport star Garth Tander has announced a unique objective for the upcoming Bathurst 1000 at Australia¡¦s famous Mt Panorama racing circuit.
Not only does Tander hope to win Australia¡¦s premier motorsport race, he is also aiming to neutralise the carbon dioxide emissions from the estimated 1,200 litres of fuel that his #34 Garry Rogers Motorsport Holden Commodore will burn over the course of the four day event.
¡¥I¡¦ve always been concerned about a sustainable environment¡¦ commented Tander.
¡¥Now I¡¦m taking this opportunity to do something about it.
¡¥One of my sponsors ¡V Fleetcare ¡V has begun a tree-planting programme that works to offset carbon dioxide emissions.
¡¥Basically, we calculate the amount of carbon dioxide my car creates every year, then we analyse how many trees would offset that quantity of carbon dioxide on an ongoing basis.
¡¥We then arrange for those trees to be planted so that the long term impact of our racing is totally neutralised¡¦ explained Tander.
The ¡§carbon neutral¡¨ project was devised by Fleetcare in conjunction with the international tree-planting group Men of the Trees.
Says Fleetcare Managing Director Nigel Malcolm, ¡¥It¡¦s not just about Garth¡¦s racing car, we run huge fleets of vehicles, day in and day out and I¡¦ve always been concerned with their impact on air quality¡¦.
¡¥Now we are doing something tangible about it.
¡¥We call our programme green.fleetcare and we can help any organisation achieve the same result with their own fleets, big or small¡¦ Malcolm said.
Tander believes carbon neutral standards will become the norm in the auto industry.
¡¥We have a social responsibility to show the lead in this area,¡¦ he says. ¡¥This project is not a one-off.
¡¥We are all here for the long term and this initiative shows we are serious about a sustainable future.
¡¥This green.fleetcare programme is our effort to set an example to the millions of enthusiasts worldwide who look to racing drivers as role models.¡¦

„X Men of the Trees advise that this equates to approximately 115 tonnes of carbon dioxide produced. (1 litre of unleaded fuel produces 2.3 kg of carbon dioxide).
„X 498 trees and native vegetation would need to be planted to offset the carbon dioxide produced last year.
„X Fleetcare, through Men of the Trees, estimate that 275 trees will need to be planted to fully offset the carbon dioxide that Garth Tander¡¦s car produces every year.
„X The Australian transport sector accounts for 77.2 million tonnes of Australia's total net greenhouse gas emissions per annum representing 14.2% of Australia's total emissions. About 88.3% come from road transport, including cars, trucks and buses. (Source: www.greenhouse.gov.au)
