McGill confident of a strong Bathurst showing
8/10/2004 22:15 (Press Release) -
Willowvale V8 Supercar driver, Aaron McGill, will this weekend [October 9 and 10] head up to Mount Panorama Bathurst with added confidence in his Howard Racing Pty Ltd team after a successful testing session in Queensland recently.
The 40-year-old, father of three, will this Saturday run in the grueling 25-lap race, which is designated for teams and their drivers that have competed in this year’s Konica Minolta V8 Supercar series.
McGill is a driver with a lot of experience around the picturesque venue, that is renowned to being one of the best race circuits throughout the world, in cars such as Super Tourers, Production Cars and previously has one V8 Supercar appearance to his name back in 2000 when he drove the second Paul Morris owned VS Commodore with Owen Kelly.
After starting this year in the PROCAR series driving a Nissan 200 SX GT in the GTP Performance class, the McGill team decided to jump ship and in May, they joined the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar series.
“The car that I was driving in the PROCAR series wasn’t going to get any faster, and when we blew up the engine at Oran Park in round two, that was the last straw, so we sat down with my sponsors and worked out a plan to join the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar series, and as they say the rest is history,” stated McGill.
“Since I joined the team mid way through the year, there have been limited testing opportunities, so basically the three Konica Minolta rounds that we contested have been test sessions, not only for me, but the team, along with the sponsors and whether they were happy with the response they received from their customers, thankfully everything has worked out.”
Heading into this weekend McGill believes that he is the most confident he’s ever been heading into a Bathurst event and would dearly like to come away with a top five finish.
“I feel like a football team, we’re coming good at the right time of the year, I’ve never been more confident heading into Bathurst than I am this year,” proclaimed McGill. “We’re in a good situation going into this weekend, because no one is giving us a chance, so we’ve got to make the most of our opportunity’s that come up, and Bathurst is the kind of circuit where if you treat it with contempt, it’ll bite you real hard.”
McGill, the only V8 Supercar driver within the Southern Highlands, has been competing at Bathurst in a number of varied divisions since the late 1980’s and is really looking forward to returning to the circuit known as Mount Panorama.
“I am really starting to feel comfortable in the car, we recently had a practice session where we tried a Bathurst setup and we were pleased with it, so I’ve come away confident, which is a great thing leading up to Bathurst,” said McGill.
“Throughout practice, I’ll be taking it steady not wanting to get involved with any crashes and once we hit qualifying that’s when I’ll be going all out to post a time that’s good enough for the first three rows on the grid, but if we fail to do that, I’ll be very disappointed.
“With Bathurst if your weekend starts off bad, it just seems to get worse, but if things start to fall into place, you know you’re going to be on a good thing, and hopefully the latter will be what occurs for me.”
So this Saturday throughout the Konica Minolta 30-lap event keep an eye out for the DUX Hot Water Systems sponsored # 27 AU Falcon, as he holds the torch for the Southern Highlands community within V8 heaven.
