Worldly excursion for Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 official
8/10/2004 22:12 (Press Release) -
This weekends Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama will contribute yet another chapter to an impressive portfolio of Events for a visiting International official.
British marshal Barry Jones has a strong motorsports pedigree and will be among a 600-strong contingent of volunteers, working tirelessly to ensure the safety of drivers and patrons during the four-day ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN between Ford and Holden.
Ironically, it was through the sudden and tragic loss of Formula One ace Ayrton Senna a decade ago that motivated Jones to become an active participant in the Marshals ranks.
That decision has seen him travel the World enjoying many visits to some of the more famous racing tracks and has finally led to his inaugural sojourn to the hallowed bitumen of Mount Panorama.
“I fulfilled the roles of incident marshal, fire marshal and flag marshal during eight British Grand Prix’s and have been involved in various capacities with a couple of American Le Mans Series meetings and endurance series in the U-K,” said Jones.
“Two Le Mans 24 hour Events have also provided many memorable moments as have the three Australian Grand Prix’s.
“My trips to Australia have previously been in March and have included a week at the AGP in Melbourne as part of four weeks holiday.
“The Chief Fire Marshal at the AGP suggested it was time to sample a bit of real Australian motorsport and I know it doesn’t get any bigger in this country than Bathurst so I’m really looking forward to the four day Event.
On arrival in Sydney, Jones will travel by campervan in order to appreciate the many sights and sounds of the Australian countryside.
The three-hour drive to Bathurst is bound to be a welcome change after the long flight from his homeland.
Then it’s time for a full blown introduction to V8 Supercar endurance racing on what is rated as one of the best racing circuits in the World during the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000.
“Having enjoyed the V8's as support races to the F1 event, it took little persuasion to give the 2004 F1 meeting in March a miss and schedule a visit to include Bathurst.
“Once again I’m combining this as part of another 4-week holiday and will be bringing my girlfriend, Linda along too.
“There’s no doubt she will enjoy the Event and be looked after as part of the marshal family.
Beyond the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN the duo plan to travel north to Queensland before returning to Sydney and then down to Melbourne to revisit the many friends established through previous visits.
