Ellery and Youlden strong threat at Bathurst
8/10/2004 22:05 (Press Release) -
“There is only one thing that is important to me at the moment and that is Bathurst,” were the words of Super Cheap Auto Racing driver, Steven Ellery this week as he prepares for the biggest event of the V8 Supercar calendar the Bob Jane Tmarts 1000 on the 7 – 10 October 2004.
Ellery and co-driver, Luke Youlden were the surprise package at the mammoth 1000 kilometre race at Mount Panorama last year with their Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon and team beating adversity to take third place.
“Without a doubt, Bathurst is one of the most important events of Australian motorsport and it is the place every team wants to go well at than any other,” Ellery commented.
“The third position last year was the highlight of my Bathurst career which spans 10 years. Last year’s result was even better than my previous third position because it was achieved by my own team.
“The only thing that could ever replace the way I feel about last year’s achievement would be a win or second position at the Mountain.”
Another thing which remains clear in the mind of Ellery is that this year his Super Cheap Auto Racing outfit will go to Bathurst with more respect than previous years.
“During the week I read somewhere that Super Cheap Auto Racing may be a wildcard at the event and one of the teams to watch,” Ellery commented, “while it is great, I can assure you that the team and I will go to Bathurst with the same focus and commitment which provided us with the edge last year.”
“In 2003, we showed that a smaller operation has the power to beat the bigger teams and we have the guts, aggression and professionalism to record podium positions at races. I am sure we will be taken more seriously this year and may even be treated as a threat by the other teams.”
Ellery’s co-driver, Luke Youlden will be going for a hat trick at Mount Panorama this year with the runner up of this year’s Konica Minolta Championship out to get his third podium position at Bathurst.
“In 2002, I won the Konica race and then was third in the main game last year,” Youlden noted, “next week I will be doing my best to help Super Cheap Auto Racing return to the podium and claim my third podium at Bathurst,” Youlden noted.
“At the time when I won the support race in 2002 it was the highlight of my career, but it was nothing compared to the third position last year. I can’t wait to get back to Bathurst and work towards claiming another podium position with Steven [Ellery].”
With the V8 Supercars roaring across the top of Mount Panorama in less than one week, Ellery is quick to point out that the Super Cheap Auto Racing outfit he heads up is even stronger this year than last when the major result was achieved.
“As I said going into Sandown, I am the fittest I have ever been and Luke has another 12 months driving experience, so there is no reason why fans at the Mount can’t expect to see us on the podium again this year,” Ellery concluded.
“The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon showed great speed at Sandown. All in all, I can’t wait to get back to the Mountain.”
