Torana the Great
2/10/2004 22:12 (Press Release) -
A cavalcade of historic Torana racing cars will set red-blooded Holden fans’ hearts racing at the Bathurst 1000 this weekend, when 15 of the best and most famous examples of the legendary marque complete a parade lap of Mt Panorama.
Muscle Car Events Australia organiser Todd Martin has assembled a classy field of cars, all of which have been restored to their original racing condition and liveries.
Leading the pack will be the two awesome HDT A9Xs driven to successive Bathurst victories in 1978-79 by Peter Brock and Jim Richards, and the 1975 championship-winning HDT L34 of Colin Bond.
Also featured will be Garth Wigston’s Roadways A9X; the Ray Kaleda Braun L34 which has been unseen since crashing in practice for the 1976 Bathurst 1000; the 2SM/Blues Union L34 of Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham; the Spicer/Stanley/Latham/Reed A9X; the Gary & Warren Smith A9X of Bob Forbes and Kevin Bartlett, and the L34 of Neil Pollard; Garry Rogers’ Greater Pacific Finance A9X, which finished 5th at Bathurst in 1979; the Dustings L34 of McRae/McRae; the Bob Janson/Larry Perkins’ Cadbury Schweppes A9X; and a trio of Ron Hodgson cars – Bob Morris’s Bathurst 1000-winning L34, his No.7 A9X and the Morris/Quester A9X.
The cars will complete a full lap of the 6.2km Mt Panorama track in an event scheduled for 7.15am on Saturday. The Torana-fest continues at 7.30am, with 100 magnificently restored road cars also completing a lap including A9Xs, L34s, XU-1s, SLR 5000s and SSs.
Following the parade, all racing and road cars will be able to be viewed at the Bathurst Showgrounds from 9am to 2pm where Holden legends Bob Morris, Harry Firth, Jim Richards and Colin Bond will sign autographs and meet Torana enthusiasts. Entry is $5.
