SBR drivers encourage fans to vote early
2/10/2004 22:11 (Press Release) -
Stone Brothers Racing’s Russell Ingall and Marcos Ambrose have encouraged the 100,000 fans expected at next weekend’s Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst to make their vote count.
Australia’s most famous touring car race will be held from October 7-10 and will be “interrupted” by the Federal Election on Saturday October 9.
Many fans will be able to vote prior to their pilgrimage to the “Mountain”, but will also be able to vote at Bathurst itself on election day.
Ingall is chasing his third Bathurst win and will team-up with Cameron McLean in the Caltex Racing Falcon.
Ingall is also hoping for a strong result to keep his championship hopes alive, just like John Howard and Mark Latham.
“I guess next weekend is going to be pretty important for a lot of people - politicians, race car drivers and sports fans included,” said Ingall.
“I think most fans will want to get their voting out of the way before they get to the Mountain so they can relax and enjoy the weekend.”
Ambrose is chasing his first victory in Bathurst in his Pirtek Falcon and will be voting prior to traveling from his base on the Gold Coast to one of the world’s most famous racing venues.
“Bathurst is the most important race of the year and if I can get one more thing done before I head up there by voting early then I will do it,” said Ambrose.
“It is going to be a huge weekend for the Australian public and motor sport fans in particular.”
Details on the location of early voting centres nation wide are available on the Australian Electoral Commission’s website at www.aec.gov.au or by calling 13 23 26 (cost of a local call).
It is compulsory that every enrolled elector votes in the 2004 federal election.
Billboards have been strategically placed on the highways leading into Bathurst directing NSW electors to nearby convenient polling places on election day. Polling places will be open from 8am to 6pm.
Race fans enrolled in New South Wales can make an absent vote at any polling place in New South Wales on election day.
Race fans from other states can only vote at the interstate voting centre located at the Old Bathurst Visitors’ Centre, 28 William St, Bathurst on election day.
