PRESTIGE AND POWER PART OF THE PACKAGE AT BOB JANE T-MARTS 1000
28/9/2004 18:41 (Press Release) -
Inaugural 1963 Bathurst winner and naming rights sponsor Bob Jane has forecast an extremely bright future for the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000, which will enjoy its 42nd year of competition on October 7-10.
From its infancy, the Mount Panorama circuit has challenged many of the driving greats and that variable coupled with the speed and power derived from today’s V8 Supercars will ensure many more successes during the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN.
“There are so many great things associated with the Event but the consistency and reliability of the mountain to bring out the best in every driver, year after year has ensured a prestige unsurpassed in any other motorsports contest,” said Jane.
“Along with Harry Firth we were able to follow through from back-to-back successes at Phillip Island in the Ford Cortina 500 to win the inaugural 1000 kilometre endurance feature.
“That was on a track that had no safety fences and we were driving a vehicle pretty much on bicycle tyres compared to what the cars of today use.
“Even then we were able to reach speeds of up to 204 km/h up the main straight.
“Caltex Chase didn’t even exist and the Cortina was durable with our pit stops simply consisting of fuel stops and one brake pad change.
“It was a fairly dangerous place to be!
“But in saying that it’s the sheer toughness of the circuit that continues to elevate the status of the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 and still test the best of the V8 Supercar drivers.”
Being so well placed to comment on the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN as a two-time Event winner and four-time Australian Touring Car Champion, Jane sees a host of variables as contributing to the excellent reputation the Event has built over four decades.
Foremost of those ingredients, which places the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 to the highest realms of National and International sport, are its longevity coupled with that same fear factor that existed from day one.
“No-one in 1963 could foresee what this race would become.
“To have been involved with the Event and witnessed its growth first hand I feel extremely proud.
“I’ve seen some of the best drivers from America come across and crumble at the thought of driving at Mount Panorama.
“Over 42 years the ‘what ifs’ and the likelihood of some sort of spectacle or drama occurring has ensured consistent interest in the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN.
“The entire combination gives this Event such appeal and sees grassroots drivers, spectators and officials booking accommodation at Bathurst well in advance and coordinating their annual holidays around it.”
Those making the annual pilgrimage to Bathurst this year will be keen to witness a power-packed performance that is sure to contribute another stunning chapter in the Mount Panorama legend.
Last year it was a record-breaking drive by Kmart Racing’s Greg Murphy and Rick Kelly that etched their names into folklore.
But when teams are assembled for the 42nd Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 on October 7-10, there’s no doubting it’ll be an action-packed scenario to see who will conquer the mountain and take the spoils from the pinnacle Event on the Australian V8 Supercar Series calendar.
