Great debut for Smiths Trucks racing rookie

10/9/2004 23:16 (Press Release) - Smiths Trucks Racings Lee Holdsworth has finished a credible sixteenth in today’s second practice session at the Betta Electrical Sandown 500 in Melbourne.

Holdsworth’s team mate Phillip Scifleet finished thirty-second in the earlier practice after struggling with under steer throughout the session.

The Smiths Trucks Racing team changed the ride height for the second session and sent Holdsworth out once the track started to dry out.

The changes to the car improved the handling and the twenty-year-old Queensland based driver in his first drive at the Sandown circuit was impressive as he sat consistently mid field on the time sheets.

“The car was great in the second session,” Holdsworth said. “Both Phillip and I really struggled with under steer in the first session so the team made some changes to the ride height before the second session which made a big improvement.

“With Phil having driven at this circuit a couple of times we all agreed it was probably best for me to spend as much time in the car today as possible to get me used to the circuit.

“I felt really comfortable out there and I am looking forward to spending some more time in the car tomorrow,” Holdsworth said.

Team owner Robert Smith said he was pleased with the performance of both his young drivers.

“I was quite happy with how they both performed in their first practice sessions,” Smith said. “We decided to send them both out in the first session to get Lee used to the track and also get combined feedback on the car.

“This proved to be very useful and we saw a big improvement in the car for the second session.

“Lee exceeded our expectations in the second session sitting consistently mid field.

“We are going to make a few more adjustments to the car overnight and I will be keen to see how it goes in tomorrow mornings practice session with Phil back in the car,” Smith concluded.

The V8 Supercars will have a final practice session at 9.45am tomorrow morning before qualifying gets underway at 12.40pm.
