V8 Supercar drivers receive clean drug result

The V8 Supercar Championship Series has announced a clean drug testing record but still reminded all drivers that the Australian Sports Drug Agency could be knocking on their door at any time.
The Australian Vee Eight Supercar Company (AVESCO) in conjunction with the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) this week issued a written reminder to teams of their obligations to ASDA that drugs have no place in the championship.
“Like every sport we have a very strong position against drugs and have zero tolerance to any illegal use of substances by our athletes,” AVESCO Chief Executive Wayne Cattach said.
“Our drivers are required to be as fit and agile as any other sportsman in the world. And like any elite athlete they do not need drugs to maintain these intense levels of fitness and concentration.
“We are committed to enforcing our drug policy and will ensure that drivers are aware that they will be met with the harshest of action should they be found in breach of the drug code.
“I am extremely proud to say that in around 25 random samples since 2000 every single one has returned negative. The biggest asset our championship has is athletes who are revered within the community as outstanding role models for all sportspeople and the millions of young kids who look up to them.”
AVESCO reminded all teams of their obligations to be drug free prior to the endurance events at Sandown in Melbourne this weekend and the Bathurst 1000 in the first week of October. The series is reaching a critical climax with five rounds to go.
“It’s important that we remain vigilant in this area and fortunately we have a group of people who are highly responsible, extremely professional and very anti-drugs,” Mr Cattach said.
“In fact almost every one of our drivers volunteers significant time to public campaigns that take a stance against the problems of drugs, alcohol abuse, drink driving, road safety and other community issues.
“They need to be recognised for the valuable contributions they are making to society.”
Active full screen drug testing may be carried out at any event which is held under the auspices of a CAMS permit. This will involve the taking of a urine sample from the competitor, which will occur at the completion of an event.
