Opals basketballer Tranquilli to join Murphy for Hot Lap
10/9/2004 12:45 (Press Release) -
Olympic basketball silver medallist Allison Tranquilli may have come away from Athens one win short of a gold medal, but the Opals guard will have the chance to belt up alongside Kmart Racing’s Greg Murphy as a reward this Friday at Sandown.
The guard, who won bronze at the Atlanta Games in 1996 in addition to silver in Athens, will be among a number of Olympians sampling V8 Supercar speed, just one of the ‘perks’ of being an Olympic medallist.
“I’ve never been in a race car before, so I’m hoping Greg will look after me!” said the 32-year-old guard, who grew up and played junior basketball in Ballarat.
“Burning around in the paddock on the farm I grew up on is about the limit of my experience, so it will be a great chance to see how hard the V8 Supercar drivers are working in the cockpit.”
Tranquilli has played most recently for Hungarian club Pecs and spent two seasons with CD Burgos in Spain, during which she was named the Spanish League’s MVP in 2001.
She has played 239 international matches for the Opals after beginning her career in 1990 in the Women’s National Basketball League here in Australia.
