Junior's expecting a junior

6/9/2004 13:01 (Press Release) - Shell Helix Racing's Steve 'Junior' Johnson and his long-time partner Bree Holman are delighted to announce that they are expecting their first child. The V8 Supercar ace was grinning from ear to ear when he was told the news.

"Bree and I are both over the moon," Steve Johnson said.

"We've been planning this for a while but we never knew that it would happen so quickly.

"I have friends that have been trying to start a family for ages so we were expecting this to take some time; here we are a couple of months later and I'm going to be a dad."

The child is expected in March.

"I already know that the timing is not perfect, the baby is due on March 18, which is the Clipsal weekend," Johnson said.

"Hopefully it'll be a few days early or a bit late and make life simple for us.

"At this stage I'm not sure what we'll do if Bree goes into labour while I'm in Adelaide.

"Obviously I want to be there for Bree and experience the birth of my child. We'll see what happens a little closer to the time and make the call then."

The expecting couple don't yet know the sex of their child.

"We don't know if it's a boy or a girl, we'll just wait and see, and love what we get," Johnson said.

"I suppose it's the greatest surprise you can have in life isn't it."

Johnson was quick to say that he wouldn't be pushing his child into motorsport.

"My children can do whatever they want in life," Johnson said.

"My dad has never pushed me to do something I didn't want to do, and I'll be doing the same. If my kid wants to drive a car, that's fine. If it wants to be an accountant or a ballerina that's fine too. As long as it is healthy and happy, then I'm sure we'll all be happy."

All four impending grandparents were on cloud nine when told the news.

"My parents are thrilled and so are Bree's (parents)," Johnson said.

"I think they are looking forward to it more than us if that's possible."

Steve's dad has given his son some very simple advice as he heads towards parenthood.

"I said to Steve that I hope he is always honest with his family," Dick Johnson said.

"You teach your kids the life that you know. We've all had good lives so far and I'm sure that Steve's family will have a good life also. Bree's a wonderful girl, she's so lovely, she will be a fantastic mother and I'm sure Steve will be a great father."
