Youlden another step closer to Championship win
5/9/2004 23:06 (Press Release) -
Super Cheap Auto Racing’s, Luke Youlden has taken another step towards winning the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship after qualifying higher than his main rivals at the final round of the series at Mallala Motorsport Park this afternoon.
Youlden has had a dream lead up to round six of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship and finished today’s qualifying session in second position only losing pole by a narrow margin to Greg Ritter late in the session.
Youlden’s main competitors in the title fight, Andrew Jones and Owen Kelly qualified third and fifth respectively for the first of tomorrow’s three races which will ultimately decide who will be crowned the winner of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship.
“Today was my best qualifying result of the series and it is the first time this year I will start the following day’s race in front of Andrew [Jones] and Owen [Kelly],” Youlden said.
“This weekend the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon has been quick since it hit the track and it is a huge advantage not to be playing catch up during tomorrow’s three races.”
“The performance of the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon has put me in a really strong position for the run to the end of the series. The car has the best brakes I’ve ever driven and the engine is good, the team has really put together the perfect setup for Mallala.”
With 17 points separating Youlden, Jones and Kelly, the Super Cheap Auto Racing driver is not bowing to the pressure and tomorrow will enter the race of his career with a clear and unclouded head.
“You really can’t afford to take the pressure on board,” Youlden said, “the way I look at it is that I don’t have the worry of having to chase and then beat the leader in order to win the series.”
Team Manager, John McLean believes Youlden’s qualifying performance is a good platform to lead Super Cheap Auto Racing to their first Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship.
“To launch into the championship deciding round of the series with a good qualifying result is vital and will pay dividends tomorrow,” McLean said.
“If we win races tomorrow that is great, but all year we have said we here to win the championship and tomorrow that is what we are planning to do.”
