Dexion determined for strong finish

21/8/2004 0:12 (Press Release) - Dexion Racing’s Tony Evangelou is determined to finish the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series on a high at Mallala, South Australia this weekend.

Evangelou, driving the red and white Dexion Ford Falcon AU, has set his sights on a top 10 result, and if luck falls his way in the tough and competitive field, he thinks the Melbourne-based team could score an upset.

With positive results coming from a successful test at Winton Raceway recently, Evangelou remains adamant that his small team can crack consistent top 10 results at Mallala.

“We have the same top 10 aim as we’ve had all year,” said Evangelou. “If it goes better, great, but with our recent test day at Winton, no doubt we’ll be able to make some inroads on our qualifying performances. We have been just outside the top 10, but if everything goes well, we may just be able to sneak in there.

“The car seems to be a lot more balanced. We’ve got the back working with front really well now. We aren’t fighting it. The test day was cold, we were on cold tyres and we were only half a second off our best, which was set on a warmer day with better tyres so that’s a very good sign.

“And these improvements will translate to Mallala. It’s a tight and twisty circuit where getting the power on early is vital and braking is critical.

“But I just want to keep out of trouble. We’ve seen what can happen in the reverse grid races so I’ll try and keep my nose clean and see what result we can pull out for Dexion and the team.”

Mallala holds happy memories for Evangelou. He sealed his Saloon
Car National Crown in 2001 during his one and only visit to the circuit.

The final round of the KMV8 Series is set to be a blockbuster. Just 15 points separate the top three drivers, while another five steerers have a mathematical chance of taking the coveted crown. Plus, Carrera Cup hotshot Alex Davison will drive a Larry Perkins-prepared Castrol Commodore, while Stone Brothers Racing’s endurance driver Greg Ritter will steer Brad Tilley’s Falcon.

Add these guys to an already impressive field and you’ve got one hell of a title showdown!

2004 has delivered Dexion Racing with mixed results. The team missed the first round of the series at Wakefield Park due to a sponsorship shortfall, but by the time Adelaide came around, Dexion had jumped on board as the team’s official backer and were delivered a brilliant seventh outright straight up. It remains their best result for the season.

In round three at Winton, Evangelou scored 20th overall but the highlight came in Race 1 when he finished eighth.

At Sydney’s Eastern Creek, they again finished 20th overall, however, in the third race, Evangelou stormed through from the back of the field to grab a well-earnt 10th.

Queensland Raceway again saw Race 3 as the highlight with another top 10 place. They finished the round at QR in 14th overall.

What does Mallala hold for the Victorian-based Dexion team? We will see you in South Australia for a fitting climax to an awesome season.
