A declaration of Waugh during Bob Jane T-Marts 1000

19/8/2004 0:45 (Press Release) - The Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama continues to be a showcase of the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN between Ford and Holden manufacturers, but on October 7-10 this year the many chants of War between the arch rivals, may be willing further support to one of this country’s greatest sporting heroes.

Australian International cricketing legend Steve Waugh was today announced Grand Marshal of the 42nd Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 and took centre stage among many of this country’s former and present motorsporting greats, as they sized each other up during the official event launch at Sydney’s Luna Park.

“As a proud Australian it’s a great honour to be here among so many of the great sportspeople who have done themselves proud on the toughest stage of motorsport, Bathurst’s famous Mount Panorama,” said Waugh.

“I have followed Bathurst ever since I was a little kid but have never been able to attend before due to my cricket commitments. I have followed it on television and I’m sure this year’s Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 will be made even more exciting by just being there.

“To be attending as Grand Marshal is a great honour and one which will allow me to get up close and personal with some of the superstars of the sport during their biggest racing assignment of the year.”

Steve Waugh can rightfully stand among many Australian sporting peers as a great ambassador of this country and his achievements in the International cricketing arena are rivalled by very few.

The current Australian of the Year holds the record as the country’s best all-time century maker in Test cricket (32) in a career that netted more than 10 000 runs at an average of 51.06.

But the former Australian captain has the utmost respect for the drivers who will hone their skills on one of the toughest touring car circuits in the World, when another chapter of the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN is played out at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama in less than two months time.

“We are talking about individuals who are at the peak of their sporting profession and to perform time and time again at that level is a great achievement,” added Waugh.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have travelled the World and played cricket on some of the best and most revered venues, but it’s always great to perform in front of a home crowd and these guys always provide great value-for-money entertainment so I’m sure we can expect more of the same come October 7-10.

The naming of Waugh as Grand Marshal for the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 is complementary to a star-studded field of drivers assembled for this year’s ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN.

IMG Director of Motorsport James O’Brien is ecstatic at how a perfect event mix is being forged in 2004, that will ensure Bathurst’s annual pilgrimage is a huge success both on and off the track.

“There’s no doubting that with Steve Waugh fulfilling the role of Grand Marshal it further adds to the prestige of the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000,” said O’Brien.

“But even more pleasing is the fact Steve was so quick to confirm his availability to attend the ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN and is looking forward to sharing the occasion with family and friends over the four days.

“It’s our pleasure to play host to one of the greats of Australian sport and I’m certain the many thousands of motor racing fans will ensure a pleasant and fulfilling experience for this Australian icon.”
