Youlden most qualified for Championship title

19/8/2004 0:43 (Press Release) - Luke Youlden has the credentials to win his and Super Cheap Auto Racing’s first V8 Supercar series title at the final round of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship at Mallala Motorsport Park this weekend.

Youlden without a doubt has been a talent which has come to the fore in the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship and is one of the few drivers in the series history to stay in the top two of the series point score for the whole year.

But it is not this amazing achievement which will provide Youlden with the edge when he takes to the track on Saturday morning, it will be Youlden’s proven championship winning driving strategy which will see him clinch this year’s title from the hands of seven drivers, who all have a mathematic chance of winning the series.

Youlden already has two national titles under his belt and is planning to silence the mummers that his only chance of winning the series will be by taking a defensive approach to racing this weekend.

“There has been talk around the paddock that the only way I can win the title is by taking a defensive approach towards the final round of the series,” Youlden commented.

“However, I can assure you that I will be pushing just as hard as any of the guys in the field and I know that come Sunday afternoon there is the highest possibility that I will be holding the series crown.”

Youlden had an 84 point lead in the series prior to the last round of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Championship but the dramatic events of the second race at Willowbank deminished that lead to just 10 points.

With extreme courage and skill, Youlden came from the rear of the field to finish in the top five in the final race of the round. An achievement which was only possible due to the Youlden’s driving ability which contains the right mix of aggression and defence.

“I have already bounced back from the events of last round and proved to everybody that I have the skill to take out the championship by coming from the rear of the grid to the top five in the final race at Willowbank,” Youlden noted.

“That kind of result is only possible through taking an aggressive approach which contains the right mix of guts and conservation to ensure the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon comes home in one piece.”

Success this weekend will provide Youlden with his third national title after taking out series wins in Formula Ford and Production Car Racing.

“With two national titles in other categories already under my belt I have experience in dealing with the pressure which can be associated with competing in a final round of a series when there is a chance of winning the whole competition. This is something I will use to my advantage with most of the other guys all vying for the series crown lacking that kind of knowledge,” Youlden said.

“In what can be described as a good omen, I won my Formula Ford title at Mallala after a similar thing happened when my fantastic points lead it was lowered to just the barest of margins after the second last round.”
