White predicts Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series finale
16/8/2004 12:24 (Press Release) -
Matthew White has forecast that round six of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar series at South Australia’s Mallala Raceway on August 20 to 22 will be the greatest finale in the history of the championship.
The Gulf Western Oils/Jayco Caravans Ford driver says the final round is a promoter’s dream.
"I really hope they give this the buildup it deserves, it would be great to see a huge crowd at Mallala for our sponsors," White said.
Seven drivers head to South Australia with a chance of taking home the title. White is among them, but the Melbourne based racer admits his realistic chances are minimal. The two times Konica Minolta series runner-up sits fifth in the championship standings but is confident of clawing his way further up the ladder.
"It will only take one DNF for the top two cars and suddenly they slip to fourth or fifth. So there’s a lot on the line."
Championship leader Luke Youlden has a 70-point break on White, so a DNF from the frontrunners is White’s only hope of snatching an unlikely championship victory.
The entry of several drivers who have not contested earlier championship rounds will add another dimension to the already fascinating scenario. Those drivers have been entered by leading level-one V8 Supercar teams to give their co-drivers race miles in the lead-up to the endurance races at Sandown and Bathurst.
"I certainly think those guys could have an influence on the outcome. I mean, I don’t want to see someone come in for one race and upset a team’s championship. I’d look pretty poorly on that if that happened. But I suppose it’s up to the likes of the Stone Brothers to give their drivers as many miles as possible."
With White’s position for the endurance events at the V8 Supercar championship leading PWR Racing team recently confirmed, he will also use Mallala as his last chance to race before Australia’s premier domestic motor races.
The final round of the Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series is at Mallala Raceway on August 21 and 22.
