Dynamik grabs best grid spot
15/8/2004 13:51 (Press Release) -
Team Dynamik will line up in its best-ever V8 Supercar grid spot after Simon Wills steered the Roadships car #44 into third position in Saturday's Top Ten shootout. Wills is set to start third in Sunday’s Race 1, behind HRT pair Todd Kelly and Mark Skaife, and next to former team mate Jason Richards.
Chasing first-out runner Todd Kelly's time of 1:09.37s, Wills kept his cool after running wide on turn 2 to bring it home on the final two sectors and record a 1:09.43s. He was then only headed by Skaife's 1:09.11s.
It was Wills’ fifth Shootout in eight rounds this year and he is starting to build real flying-lap experience in his VY Commodore. He will start ahead of several better-fancied Supercar drivers, including Marcos Ambrose and Greg Murphy.
Wills was optimistic about the South Australian team's chances in Sunday’s two 54-lap races: "This is the first time that we've been at the pointy end, but it's where we expect to be really."
"This weekend has been fantastic for us. It was the first time that we've wheeled the car out and been fast from the word go," he said.
Wills was second fastest in the first and third practice sessions, and sixth fastest in qualifying. While his Shootout time did not match his qualifying pace, none of the other nine drivers matched those times either.
It has been a challenging season for Team Dynamik, and today's qualifying result is a positive move toward its focus on V8 consistency.
"The whole year has been a bit of a struggle where we've had one good session and then two or three bad ones," he said.
"This weekend's been a lot more consistent for us and hopefully we can continue that on for the race."
Team mate Dale Brede, in the Roadships car #45, qualified in 30th position while Team Dynamik test driver Will Davison, loaned to drive the Imrie Motorsport car #14, will start in 28th place on the grid.
