Kable honoured with naming of new award

10/6/2000 17:57 (Jason Whittaker) - The V8 Supercars’ brightest young stars will be gunning for a new award this year, to be named in honour of legendary motorsport Journalist, Mike Kable.

AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane announced the naming of the new award – the Mike Kable Rookie of the Year Award – today from the streets of Canberra.

Kable, who died of cancer on Tuesday last week, was synonymous with Motorsport Journalism in Australia and one of the most respected men in the media room.

In announcing the honour, Cochrane spoke of Kable’s dedication to the sport and the respect held by all who worked with and around him.

"Mike Kable will forever remain an inspiration for his vision and unwavering support of young drivers and his contribution to the V8 Supercar category,” Cochrane said.

"Mike was both a friend and unabashed publicist to a host of up-and coming motor racing talent from Craig Lowndes, to Mick Doohan and Sir Jack Brabham,” he said.

"He was always looking for the next great driver and I am honoured to name this prestigious award after him," he concluded.

The award will include a $15,000 AVESCO sponsorship grant to aid in the development of the recipient.

Last year, Commodore campaigner Rodney Forbes was voted as the Rookie of the Year.

The newly-named Mike Kable Rookie of the Year Award will be presented, along with many other gongs, at a “lavish” V8 Supercar gala dinner at Melbourne’s Crown Casino in early December. The Ten Network will televise the event.
