Orrcon Racing heads back to school
14/8/2004 15:28 (Press Release) -
Orrcon Racing drivers Jason Bargwanna and Mark Winterbottom headed back to school as a part of the WSFM “Back to School Friday” outside broadcast at Bradbury Public School in Sydney’s Western Suburbs this morning.
While heading back to the classroom brought back memories for the pair of V8 Supercar drivers their appearance at the event was the highlight of the day for the 700 students, many of which took the opportunity to get up close and chat with the drivers while obtaining a personally signed Orrcon Racing poster.
“Sometimes it is an event like this where you realize how popular our sport of V8 Supercar racing really is with the kids,” said Bargwanna.
“It was really enjoyable to see how much these kids get into our sport and it is always fun to be on breakfast radio with Jonesy and Kayley.
“I think if I wasn’t a race car driver I could handle being a breakfast radio DJ, they seem to have a lot of fun.
“The only thing that would worry me would be the 4am starts.”
Bargwanna and Winterbottom weren’t the only stars of the day with the 2004 Kidney Kar Rally beginning from the school beginning its trek from Sydney to to Coolangatta the long way via Temora, Broken Hill, Bourke and Goondiwindi.
In excess of 80 cars began the event today with a crowd of approximately 2000 was gathered to wish them well on their journey.
Winterbottom will be involved in a similar event next week when he joins the XXXX Variety Club True Blue Bash that begins in Mackay today.
The reigning Konica Champion links up with his fellow bashers in Mount Isa on Monday afternoon before having a stint behind the wheel an Orrcon supported Falcon when the bash continues on its trek towards Kakadu on Tuesday morning.
“This weekend I am driving one of the fastest and most powerful race cars in the country around Oran Park and next week I’ll go back to yesteryear in a 30 year-old Falcon in the bash, it’s going to be an interesting change,” said Winterbottom.
“From what I have seen of the previous bash’s everyone has a blast and It is something I have never done before and completely different to what I would normally be doing when I am involved in the race team, I am looking forward to the adventure.”
While Bargwanna and Winterbottom may have enjoyed their time “back to school” this morning their focus has already turned towards the on track action at Oran Park for Round Eight of the Championship with practice beginning this afternoon.
A further two practice sessions will be held tomorrow before qualifying later in the afternoon followed by the Top Ten Shootout. The round will be highlighted with a pair of 140km races on Sunday.
