Matching pace with performance
14/8/2004 15:27 (Press Release) -
Matching race pace with consistency will be the focus for Team Dynamik at this weekend’s Round 8 of the V8 Supercar Championship, held at Sydney’s Oran Park from 13-15 August.
Team Dynamik’s Roadships #car 44 recorded one of the five quickest laps last race at Winton and driver Simon Wills believes the breakthrough podium result is not far away.
“We’re more than happy with the pace of the car and the pit stops have been improving all the time - now we’ve just have to focus on reliability,” he said. “When we get it all together on the one day, then people will say ‘where have you been’?”
Team Dynamik blitzed qualifying at last year’s Oran Park round, with both VY Commodores in the top 10 qualifiers, a remarkable effort for a first-year team.
Wills believes the Team can build on that set-up knowledge, on a 2.7km track renowned for its technical corners and demands on concentration.
“With good weather we’re likely to be very quick,” he said. “We had the set-up right here last year, so we’ll start there, and make the right adjustments. We won’t try to reinvent the wheel,” he said.
“This track is very technical with varying types of corners … it offers more opportunity to put gaps in the field than on a track like Queensland Raceway which only has six corners,” he said.
The western Sydney circuit holds no fears for Roadships car #45 driver Dale Brede, fresh from a season-best 12th place for Team Dynamik at Winton last round.
Brede knows this circuit well, having raced impressively here during his 2001 Konica campaign, recording top ten finishes in three races.
“It’s a good circuit and I have raced well here. Simon and I have been going over the track and we were looking at areas where we can pick up time … for example making sure that you’re carrying a certain amount of speed through turns 4 and 5,” he said.
“Simon also pointed out where using the kerb can help your grip on the next corner,” he said.
“We’ll again be concentrating hard in qualifying to make sure that we don’t start back in the field,” he said. “It was good to place well last round, but one race doesn’t make a championship.”
Two 140km races on Sunday will complete the round, with practice on Friday and qualifying on Saturday.
