Ellery to be taken prisoner for Kids Help Line
14/8/2004 15:20 (Press Release) -
V8 Supercar drivers are familiar with lock ups on the track, but how will Super Cheap Auto Racing’s Steven Ellery cope with a lock up with a difference when he is taken prisoner by his crew in order to raise money for the Kids Help Line?
At 10.30am on Friday 13 August 2004, Ellery will be imprisoned by crew members from Super Cheap Auto Racing when they confine him to his V8 Supercar using race tape to ensure he does not escape without raising bail.
Ellery will then have one hour to contact sponsors of Super Cheap Auto Racing and ask them to help bail him out so he can participate in the first practice session at round eight of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at Oran Park, on the outskirts of Sydney.
Ellery’s bail has been set at $1000.
“Being a parent, I take comfort in knowing that there is a service available for people aged 5 to 18 where they can access non-judgemental counselling services and receive help to get them through some of the pains which can be experienced during growing up,” Ellery said.
“I just hope that I can raise the money for the kids and furthermore make it out of the car in time for practice later in the afternoon.”
Kids Help line is Australia’s only free, 24 hour, confidential and anonymous telephone and on line counselling service for Australia’s 5 to 18 year olds. Kids Help Line currently answers over 10,000 cries for help each week across Australia. Thousands more continue to go unanswered.
“This day gives workmates a fabulous opportunity to lock up their boss, building office morale and community participation – all for Kids Help Line,” said Lyndley Sandford Reeks, Senior Marketing Manager Kids Help Line. “People like Steven Ellery are essential to us in raising important funds to answer more cries for help.”
People wishing to assist the Kids Help Line raise $1 million dollars to answer more cries for help can post donations for Steven’s bail online at www.lockupyourbossday.com.au or call 1800 552 033 to make contribution to the BoysTown service over the telephone.
Last round of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at Winton Motor Raceway, Ellery recorded his best result in the series, with his Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon finishing sixth overall after starting the race from grid position 27.
“It has been a challenging year and the result recorded at Winton was fantastic,” Ellery commented, “the brains trust at Super Cheap Auto Racing provided me with a fantastic strategy and from there I was able to drive the car to sixth.”
“The Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon was fantastic at Oran Park last year and qualified seventh. With this in mind and the great result of last round, I am really looking forward to another strong result this weekend.”
