Athens motivator for Brock assault at Bob Jane T-Marts 1000

14/8/2004 15:15 (Press Release) - Star performer and nine times Bathurst winner Peter Brock will be buoyed in his upcoming Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 campaign, as he undertakes a month-long assignment at the Athens Games.

Just as he did during the Sydney Games Brock will fulfil the role of Athlete Liaison for the National team, drawing on his own experiences in the elite levels of motorsport to instil a positive attitude into our sporting hopefuls.

The key pointers of motivation, relaxation under extreme pressure and dealing with adversity will be focal towards our athletes achieving their best and are variables that Brock has mastered throughout his professional driving career, especially during Bathurst’s ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN.

The Australian sporting icon, lining up for his 32nd start at Mount Panorama, will once again call upon his many years of taming the mountain in the hope of securing his 10th victory on October 7-10 as part of a strong Holden Racing Team outfit.

“In Sydney it was quite surprising to realise how much knowledge of motorsport and in particular Bathurst’s famous endurance race that all the Australian athletes possess,” said Brock.

“I’ve been active in this role since 1999 and have been involved with numerous training camps and performance sessions for a wide range of sports and for me it’s a two-fold situation.

“The athletes can derive positives from my past experiences and are able to question me about different aspects relating to appropriate preparation and execution at the elite level.

“But I also come away from the experience a much more motivated individual.

“It’ll be hard yakka over the next month but to go over to Athens and deal with people who are at the peak of their sport Internationally is a rare opportunity.

“When you’ve got a front row seat as more than 7000 of the World’s best athletes are aspiring for excellence you can’t help but be inspired.

As Bathurst’s all-time most successful driver, Brock is considered one of the front-runner’s to claim this year’s Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 title when he links with British Touring Car ace Jason Plato in the famous racing #05 Holden Commodore.

The obvious crowd favourite will boast plenty of parochial Holden support, but again his experiences in Athens could also provide him the edge to claim V8 Supercar’s ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN crown.

“While I won’t be driving in Athens I will be involved in a range of training sessions specific to each sport so that’s sure to keep the fitness levels up,” added Brock.

“If anything, such cross training will probably have me fitter than usual as the body will have to adjust to the different demands.

“I arrive back in Australia the day before the Betta Electrical Sandown 500 and then leave with Todd Kelly to contest an eight-day safari event.

“There’ll be no problems about spending enough time behind the wheel before the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 and I’ll be raring to go come start time.”

Brock admits the weight of expectation will ensure the 2004 Mount Panorama assignment will be extra challenging, although he does anticipate putting on a ‘pretty good show for the fans’ and hoping to come away from the event declaring his HRT team had had ‘one hell of a good weekend.’
