Brilliant strategy leads Ellery to best result of 2004
14/8/2004 15:03 (Press Release) -
Steven Ellery has made a massive comeback at round seven of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship with the Super Cheap Auto Racing driver coming from almost the rear of the grid to finish 6th at Winton Motor Raceway today.
While things appeared dismal following yesterday’s qualifying performance of 27th a brilliant strategy devised by the brains trust of Super Cheap Auto Racing ensured Ellery made up a massive 21 positions by the end of today’s 300 kilometre race.
“We knew going into qualifying yesterday that we had the car to produce a strong result, however the circumstances surrounding the red flags and traffic meant that the full potential of the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon could not be displayed,” Ellery said.
“Yesterday we said that starting from the rear would have its benefits in the wet, however with today’s race being dry the crew at Super Cheap Auto Racing provided me with the strategy that made today’s sixth position possible.”
It was a fantastic result for Ellery who maintained his position during the start of the race to be in the top 10 when the crew decided to bring the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon in on lap 33 for the first compulsory pit stop for tyres.
The second pit stop for fuel was completed on the 39th lap with Ellery rejoining the race in the top 16 when the fallout from the safety car period had settled.
“The great pit stop strategy was complemented by a fantastic Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon. From there it was just a matter of complementing consistent laps and bringing the car home in good condition,” Ellery commented.
It is Ellery’s best result in the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship with the Super Cheap Auto Racing driver bouncing back from a first corner crash at the previous round of the series at Queensland Raceway.
“To comeback from the disappointment of our last round and get my best finish of the year [sixth] is brilliant,” Ellery noted.
“I said prior to arriving at Winton that I was hungrier than ever. I even made changes to my training schedule to compensate on the race fitness I missed out on at Queensland which made all the difference today.
“It is good to feel that things are coming together at Super Cheap Auto Racing and with only one round until the start of the endurance races at Sandown, I’m sure we’ll produce another strong result.”
