Tasmania well ahead of schedule in preparation for V8 Supercar return

14/8/2004 14:44 (Press Release) - The Tasmanian Government and Events Tasmania will provide permanent pit facilities for all V8 Supercar Championship Series teams more than a year ahead of schedule.

In a tribute to the leadership of Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon, an outline of works was unveiled today revealing that the Government is well ahead of schedule in preparation for Round 12 of the championship in November.

“The Tasmanian Premier was integral in allowing Tasmania the chance to welcome back the V8 Supercar Championship Series and is again showing his great leadership strength by making it come together,” V8 Supercar Championship Series Chief Executive Officer Wayne Cattach said.

“Mr Lennon’s foresight tells him that having the only truly national sport back in his state will do no end of good for Tasmania, tourism and the international appeal of such a great place.

“Tasmanian events has already been overwhelmed by inquiries from the mainland from people who want to come to the event and make a holiday of it and we know Tasmanians will also embrace the event. This is absolutely fantastic news for all concerned.”

The primary works being undertaken are that of the 32 permanent pit garages that will allow teams to have all they need to stage a memorable event. This will include a fully serviced and sealed paddock area.

Safety upgrades are also being undertaken following advice from AVESCO and the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS).

The improvements will be followed in the second year by permanent corporate, media and administration facilities as well as more improved spectator facilities.

Premier Lennon said it was vital to have the improvements complete and operational as soon as possible.

"Tasmanians can't wait to hear the V8s roar at Symmons Plains again,” he said.

"This is the first step towards ensuring the supercars keep returning to Tassie for many years to come. I'm proud that the State Government has been able to bring the V8s back and I look forward to monitoring the improvements at the circuit in the countdown to our round of the series in November."

The Tasmanian Government has signed an agreement for the V8 Supercars to conduct a round of their event in Tasmania for the next five years commencing in November 2004.
