Shootout form sparks attack

14/8/2004 14:44 (Press Release) - All out attack will be Team Dynamik’s race plan at this weekend’s Round 7 of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at the Winton Motor Raceway. Driver Simon Wills, in the Roadships car #44, said the frustrations of Team Dynamik’s second season could be blown away with a strong result in Sunday’s 300km race.

“We’ve got nothing to lose with our position in the Championship … we’re going to attack full on and try to convert our good qualifying form into a strong result,” he said.

Wills has made four from six Top 10 shootouts this year – only five other drivers have been in more Shootouts this year, and three of those are the Series top pointscorers. Consistently placing in the top ten qualifiers does not reflect Wills’ current championship position of 29th.

“We’ve got to convert those shootout starts into a good placing,” he said.

Winton’s 3km circuit in central Victoria is a test track for many of the field’s teams but race day results do not always reflect this advantage.

“We’ve consistently got good car speed … we just need to maintain a good race pace to score some results,” Wills said.

Team Dynamik’s two VY Commodores qualified 13th and 22nd at Winton last year, and that race data will be invaluable in setup for this weekend’s round. Wills has also performed well here – in the 2001 Konica V8 Series he won a Winton race in a Team Dynamik Holden VT, on his way to winning that year’s title.

Dale Brede, in the Roadships car #45, is also looking to release some frustration after a luckless run at Queensland Raceway last round.

He retired after a first-corner crash, left with no clear track after a bunch tangled ahead of him. This weekend he’s working hard on improving his qualifying position and push up into the pack.

Brede has been in the leading bunch in Konica V8 races at Winton, and the track holds no surprises for him.

“I’m confident that we have good car speed, and this weekend well be giving it a red-hot go,” he said.

Sunday’s race starts at 1300 AEST, with practice and qualifying on Saturday.
