WPS Racing looking to celebrate at Winton
14/8/2004 14:44 (Press Release) -
WPS Racing is looking for reason to celebrate both on and off the track at Winton this weekend. Drivers David Besnard and Mark Noske are expecting an improved performance on track after testing last week indicated the team has overcome engine difficulties that have plagued its past few starts.
If it achieves this it will provide extra reason for an off-track celebration, with Noske to celebrate his 30th birthday on Sunday.
“Hopefully I can stay out of trouble and give myself a good birthday present on Sunday,” said Noske.
“I’ve never raced on my birthday before so it will be a new experience and hopefully it will be a happy one.”
Noske has reason to be more confident going into the seventh round of the championship, with WPS Racing’s test day at Queensland Raceway last week indicating its new engines should give it improved performance.
“We had a good test day and we feel we have made further improvement in the cars, so this weekend should be a little better for us,” he said.
Team mate David Besnard was similarly impressed with the test session.
“We feel we have made some more improvement and we will be looking to display that at Winton,” said Besnard.
The test session also included WPS Racing’s endurance team of Kiwi John McIntyre and Malaysian Alex Yoong, who will couple with Besnard and Noske in the Sandown and Bathurst endurance races later this year.
Both drivers felt the cars had improved from the previous test session several weeks earlier.
“It was great to again get some mileage in the WPS BA at Queensland Raceway, although we were very limited to the number of laps we could do,”
said McIntyre.
“The team has worked on the cars since our last test and there were notable suspension and engine improvements.
“We also practiced pitstops and driver changes in readiness for the enduros. I am now feeling more comfortable in the car thanks to the opportunity to complete three test days with the team. Bring on Sandown!”
WPS Racing is sponsored by Wright Patton Shakespeare Financial Group, a company headed by WPS Racing team owner Craig Gore.
Gore has just returned from China where he participated in the official ceremony to announce the V8 Supercar Championship Series will travel to Shanghai for one round over each of the next five years.
He was accompanied by WPS Racing’s ex-Formula One driver Alex Yoong, who drove dignitaries including Queensland Premier Peter Beattie on a series of hot laps around the impressive new Shanghai International Circuit.
