2004 V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP – Rnd 6
Queensland Raceway (Ipswich) – July 2nd – 4th, 2004
Sunday July 4th – 90-lap/280k race:
Ford’s Marcos Ambrose virtually led all the way to win today’s 6th round of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship at Queensland Raceway. Apart from the Compulsory Pit Stop, Ambrose’s SBR Falcon had the measure of his challengers, which included at times, Todd Kelly, Jason Bright and Steven Richards and his SBR team mate Russell Ingall.
A first corner/first lap crash took out Steven Ellery, John Bowe, Greg Murphy and Dale Brede, while a rear wheel-hub problem sidelined HRT’s Mark Skaife on lap 48.
Skaife’s HRT partner Todd Kelly finished 9th and moved to 8th in the Series but could have finished much higher except for a vibrating front brake rotor.
Ambrose won from Richards and Garth Tander, so Ambrose extends his lead to 58 points over Richard’s Commodore, with Bright a further 55 points back in 3rd.
Car #2/Chassis 049:
Race:
Position – DNF (retired, lap 48)
Fastest lap – 1 min 12.03 seconds
Round result: - 26th
Round Points - Nil
Championship Points – 540
Championship Position – 15th
Mark Skaife:
“The car was showing more and more oversteer on the right hand corners as the race went on and, we tried to adjust it during the fuel stop on lap 44. 4 laps later though the car just took off at turn 1 and when we got it back to the pits, we found the left rear hub had failed. It’s frustrating that we had another front row start but, couldn’t turn it into a result.”
Car #22/Chassis 048:
Race:
Position – 9th
Fastest lap – 1 min 12.03 seconds
Round result: - 9th
Round Points - 144
Championship Points – 741
Championship Position – 8th
Todd Kelly:
“That was a very hard day at the office! The brake problem cropped up early and, just got worse. I had one off and was lucky not to beach it in the sand, while it was frustrating to keep slipping back and not be able to hold people out. Still we finished and gained a bit in the Championship.”
