Ellery To Start Queensland 300 In Top 13
4/7/2004 11:47 (Press Release) -
Steven Ellery has built the foundations for a strong result at round six of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon qualifying 13th at Queensland Raceway this afternoon.
With Ellery using practice yesterday as an opportunity to test race setup in a competitive environment, the main focus of Super Cheap Auto Racing today was to gain as much speed as possible. Ellery achieved his goal with the #31 Falcon fifth in the session prior to qualifying.
“I feel as though I am in a great position prior for tomorrow’s 280 kilometre endurance race,” said Ellery, “after using yesterday [Friday] as an opportunity to test race setup and with the Super Cheap Auto Racing Falcon showing great speed today I am feeling very confident about Sunday.”
Ellery’s qualifying performance today continues to reinforce the fact that Super Cheap Auto Racing is coming back into form after a challenging start to the year and the movement of key personnel.
“I cannot stress enough how great it is to be finally sitting back in the top 15 and only just missing the top ten shoot out by the smallest of margins,” Ellery commented.
“Over the last two rounds my qualifying performance has improved and with that so to does my outright position at the end of each race.”
Ellery who is 29th in the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship notes the importance of not only a strong race finish to boost his series point score but also to help the team in the lead up to the endurance races at Sandown and Bathurst.
“The events of the first two rounds of the series hit me pretty hard in the series point score, but as the year progresses and other people suffer misfortunes similar to myself the gap between everybody narrows,” Ellery stated.
“Personally I prefer the longer races and believe they are extremely important to everyone at Super Cheap Auto Racing in the lead up to Bathurst and Sandown.”
Super Cheap Auto Racing Team Manager, John McLean echoes Ellery’s positive outlook towards round six of the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship.
“With Super Cheap Auto Racing testing last week and the approach taken by the team over the two practice sessions prior to qualifying, Steven [Ellery] is in a strong position to continue with the progress made over the last three rounds of the series,” McLean noted.
The action of the Queensland 300 kicks off at 1.45pm tomorrow, where Ellery and competitors in the 2004 V8 Supercar Championship will each contest 90 laps around Queensland Raceway on the outskirts of Brisbane.
