Shane Beikoff Racing and Yoong Qualify in top ten

4/7/2004 11:45 (Press Release) - Local Queensland Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Team Shane Beikoff Racing has proven it has the speed to mix it with the best in the business, after ex-Formula 1 steerer Alex Yoong qualified the AU Falcon inside the Top 10 in Round 5 of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8 Supercar Series at Queensland Raceway.

After two successful practice sessions, in which the Shane Beikoff Racing AU Falcon never dropped from the Top 15, Yoong produced a 1minute 11.7477 around the 3.1km Queensland Raceway circuit to place the AU Falcon in 9th position on the grid, the highest placing for Shane Beikoff Racing in the team’s 3 year history.

Yoong was excited about the achievement of a Top 10 placing in Qualifying, and also was confident of a race set-up which would produce consistent lap times.

“I tested with the Shane Beikoff Racing team last Tuesday at Queensland Raceway, and it’s really paid off. The car is the best it’s ever been, and the boys in the crew have given me a good tool to produce the goods. I actually think we could have produced an 11.5 second lap, which could have placed us 6th or 7th on the grid, but we opted to conserve our tyres for Race 3 on Sunday” the 28 year old Malaysian said.

“But I know that the car has a great race set-up, and the practice sessions proved that. We can consistently do low 1 minute 12-second laps, and I think over the distance of the races we can even move up a few more spots. I guess we’ll wait and see, but I guess a Top 5 or 6 spot is up for grabs, given the right situation,” Yoong continued.

Shane Beikoff Racing Team Manager Shane Beikoff was exhilarated with the result, saying Alex was a great asset to the team and was very confident of a great outcome during the 3 races.

“Alex has given us a great deal of feedback to work with, and as a result the car is the best it’s ever been, and the whole crew are very excited to be at the top end of the field,” Beikoff explained.

“Considering the budget we’re working with, it’s a huge result for the team, and we’re so proud to be doing this well at our home Queensland event, in front of all our fans and friends who have come to support us,” Beikoff concluded.

Racing in Round 5 of the 2004 Konica Minolta V8Supercar Series will take place tomorrow, with 16 lap journeys in Race 1 and the full-reverse grid Race 2.
